Dayton Lanphere lives in Central Oregon and has been a wood carver for more than twenty years. Dayton seems to have an affinity with eagles, herons and cranes--with an occasional pelican thrown in for good measure--and each piece is close to life-size. Walnut and other hardwoods comprise the bulk of Dayton's work, but he also has done a variety of bronze sculptures. Dayton's pieces are not for the faint of heart, as life size works require appropriate display space. His work is bold and incredibly intricate. each feather and feature is fully brought to life. He captures each bird's "lifestyle" immaculately: the herons and pelicans stand "in wait" of their prey, and the eagles are deftly swooping down on an unexpecting migrating salmon. Dayton also creates unique wall sculptures which capture the rhythm of life in the free-flowing streams of the Pacific Northwest.
