Award winning artist Sam McDowell has a studio in Carmel California and in Bequia, West Indies. A one time art professor at Princeton, Mr. McDowell was introduced to the art of scrimshaw by then Senator John F Kennedy in 1955. Mr McDowell is widely regarded as among the premier American Scrimshanders and folk artists, and is the recipient of the coveted Peabody Fellowship. His work has been exhibited internationally and is found in the finest shops, galleries and in private collections. He personally engraves each knife by hand with illustrations based upon his original designs.
